Written Summary:
This course
is an excellent overview of the filipino martial arts approach to knife fighting.
The material for the most part is combat knife oriented and not overly artistic and
esoteric. This is good because of the serious nature of knife fighting ( quite literally
life and death ) and the legal ramifications that are inherent when using a blade
against another human being. Mr. Worden, as in several other of his videos, assumes
a basic knowledge on the part of the viewer and moves directly into the training.
Because of this approach, he is able to cover much more material than is generally
found in other martial art videos, and he gives the viewer approximately 90 minutes
of non stop demonstration and teaching. This could be a liability if the viewer is
unfamiliar with or unwilling to learn some of the material ( such as joint locks
and takedowns ) from other sources.
As the title suggests, the material is
arranged in a progressive order. The tape begins with a display of various knives
and a brief discussion of each weapon’s characteristics. Mr. Worden moves into the
material with a section on defensive counter lines, which are basically moves to
simply save yourself when both you and the opponent have a knife. The following segments
in the video deal with low line cutting, merging empty hand techniques with knife
work, reverse grip work, live hand monitoring, live blade training, counters and
finishing holds, double knife fighting, and closes with a section on empty hand vs
the knife. In each section, Mr Worden shows multiple options, and he does so in rapid
fire succession, which allows him to cover so much material on this video.
This
is a very good video on knife fighting. The material is oriented toward the student
with some degree of experience in the martial arts. However, anyone can learn a great
deal from this video. If you are interested in knife fighting, this video is a good
place to look.
