Written Summary:

None of the Indonesian arts that belong in the Silat category are easy to understand at the beginning. That is why I was impressed with the way Mr. Chase demonstrated his version of Silat in this video. He begins by going over the 5 common fighting positions found in Mande Muda, some of which are highly unorthodox. From here, the majority of the tape consists of learn different types of Silat entries ( and there are a great many shown in this video ) and some possible follow ups after the entry has been made.

Mr. Chase then gives us some sample "jurus" which look a little bit like Silat versions of what we would call katas. He states that these jurus are for using when you do not have a partner to practice with and for proper conditioning of the leg muscles ( which is very understandable once you see the techniques which require great leg strength and flexibility ).

Mr. Chase closes by showing us various takedowns that work off of the various entries that he has shown earlier.

This is a video with a lot of information on it. How much Silat is practical for use in a street fight ? I don't really know. But there is enough material on this tape that, if used correctly in a bar fight, you could be stacking the bodies in a pile in the middle of the dance floor. This is a difficult art to learn, but it is fun to watch and would certainly catch most opponents off guard due to it's unconventional tactics.
